The seven-day Amazing Montenegro tour takes you through the most spectacular natural regions of Montenegro, all Montenegrin national parks and many protected areas, but also introduces you to the impressive cultural heritage of Montenegro, local traditions, gastronomic offer, etc.
We will spend most of the tour in the northern region of Montenegro, mostly away from the crowds, in mountainous surroundings, passing through many villages, crossing deep canyons, exploring UNESCO natural and cultural heritage, getting to know the culture of the highlands of Montenegro, enjoying local food specialties.
Then, full of new energy, we return to the southern areas and enjoy the beauties of Skadar Lake and, finally, meet the region known as old Montenegro and old capital of Cetinje. We will climb to the top of the Montenegrin "Olympus", Mount Lovcen, and finish with a view of, as Lord Byron put it, the most beautiful encounter between the land and the sea, the Bay of Kotor.
After landing at the airport in Podgorica, your driver/guide will be waiting for you in the entrance hall with a welcome sign with your name, and after a short acquaintance you will head in the direction of the capital. You will enjoy a short panoramic ride and have a short break to try some of the famous Podgorica coffees.
After about 40 minutes drive through the Bjelopavlići plain we will reach the Ostrog monastery. One of the most significant Montenegrin monasteries and surely the most famous and spectacular one is located some 45 km away from Podgorica at 900 meters above sea level, under the steep cliff of Ostrog Mountain (after which it was named). The monastery of impressive appearance was founded in mid-17th century by a monk and a superior of one of the eparchy of former Serbian Orthodox Church – Vasilije, whose cult has vastly spread so the present-day monastery stands as one of the most visited Orthodox spiritual centers worldwide. It is visited by people of different religions. We will find out more about the role of church in traditional Montenegro’s society, St Vasilije cult and fresco painting.
After an approximately one-hour visit to the Monastery, we continue driving through the beautiful Montenegrin regions further towards the higher areas of the Montenegrin north, passing through the second largest city in the country, Nikšić. We will visit the nature park from which starts the most famous Montenegrin canyoning adventure through the Nevidio canyon, one of the last unconquered European canyons and in the immediate vicinity of which there are 2 beautiful mountain lakes of glacial origin.
The second day of our tour is reserved for exploring the Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will start with its pearl - Black lake, one of the 18 glacial lakes of the Durmitor massif, known as mountain eyes. We will walk along the path around the lake, through the coniferous forest, which provides numerous opportunities to enjoy the landscape, we will activate our senses and breathe the freshest air. Canoeing enthusiasts can rent canoes and enjoy the beauties of the lake
Tara Canyon is the deepest European canyon and one of the deepest in the world, so we will not miss the chance to visit the lookout with a view of the deepest part of the Tara Canyon (1330 m). The altitude difference between the lookout and the river is about 1000 m.
We will drive through the famous Durmitor villages on the famous route called "Durmitor ring", descend into the deep canyon of the river Sushica, and see from various angles the most famous mountain in the north popularly called the director of all mountains, and get acquainted with the local flora. We will visit the site with mysterious medieval monuments - Stećak tombstones, enjoy the view of the Piva canyon and Piva lake, learn about the geomorphological characteristics of Durmitor, visit Katun - a temporary mountain livestock village, and end the day and spend the night again in Žabljak, the highest town in the Balkans. * The complete Durmitor ring tour is guaranteed to be available from June 15 (due to possible snow on the roads in the period from May to the first half of June). In case the tour takes place in the period May-June and is still not completely available, the inaccessible sites will be adequately replaced by some other attractions in the Durmitor National Park.
The bridge on Đurđevića Tara is certainly the most spectacular bridge in Montenegro. It was built just before the beginning of the Second World War on the largest wooden scaffolding ever built in the world at the time. It is a place where many films have been made and many stories have been told. If you like an adrenaline adventure, here you can try one of the longest European zip lines.
It is time to really feel the freshness of the clear river Tara, dip our hands and wash our faces in the tear of Europe, as they still call it. We will be riding in special rubber boats down the river rapids, accompanied by experienced and professional skippers, enjoy the view of the spectacular bridge on Đurđevića Tara, and of course enjoy local specialties for lunch after rafting.
On our way through the canyon of the river Tara there is a centuries-old forest of black pine. The trees that impress with their appearance and height are called the guardians of the canyon. Some of them are more than 400 years old and almost 50 m high.
This is a day where we will slow down a bit. We will start the day with a short walk through the center of the small mountain town of Kolašin, get acquainted with the famous anti-fascist past of the city, visit the local market.
National Park, whose protection began back in 1878 is only half an hour drive from Kolasin. Walking around the beautiful glacial lake at a leisurely pace we will get to know its main features. The flora is especially impressive with one of the 3 remaining European rainforests and trees over 400 years old and as high as 60 m. The bravest can swim in the lake or kayak or canoe in calm lake water.
This is a day when we will have a real gastronomic experience, learn how the famous Kolasin layered cheese is produced, one of 5 food products protected as a national brand, or taste other local specialties in the authentic ambience of a local rural family household. We can spend the afternoon walking along the Tara River or we can book a panoramic cable car ride and enjoy the view from one of the peaks of Bjelasica Mountain.
Montenegro is a country of strong tribal tradition and today we will start with a visit to the territory of the Vasojevići tribe, one of the most famous and largest in the country. They are proud of their courage, but also of the Komovi mountain, which they call the king of all mountains, which today, with its surroundings, has the status of a nature park. The jagged peaks, blueberry fields, old forests and cattle-breeding settlements of Katuni that we will visit will give you an authentic experience of this part of Montenegro.
Montenegro is also a country inhabited by national minorities and the second part of the day is reserved for the natural beauties of the region in which they live and for their cultural heritage. Our program includes a walk along the largest glacial lake in Montenegro - Plav Lake, as well as a visit to the famous Redžepagić Tower, a cultural monument but also a symbol of architecture of Plav, the oldest and best preserved monument of Islamic residential and fortification architecture in Montenegro, built in the 17th century.
Gusinje is a small town near the border with Albania and the Prokletije National Park and is known for the largest and most abundant karst spring in Montenegro - Alipaša's springs, a place of traditional summer gatherings and events and extraordinary natural beauty. After half an hour of pleasant walk through the valley surrounded by the mountain range Prokletije we will reach another hydrological phenomenon known as a Grasshopper’s eye, a karst spring known for its beautiful color.
One of the most significant Montenegrin monasteries is located just next to the Moraca river, and contains some of the most beautiful icons and frescoes not just in Montenegro but in the Balkans. There is a great history behind this 8 centuries old religious place and it is one of the most visited monasteries in Montenegro.
Just 30 minutes away from Podgorica there is a spectacular canyon of Moraca river, about 30 km long and up to 1000 m deep, famous for its steep cliffs. Our stop will be in the middle of the canyon with a view on clear and green Moraca river.
Just 20 minutes away from Podgorica there is Skadar Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans, the area proclaimed national park, enlisted as Ramsar wetland of international importance, famous for its birds (about 270 species), fish, water lilies, rich cultural heritage, charming villages and the best Montenegrin wine. We will be driving around the lake, have a short walk in the charming settlement called Virpazar, enjoying the view from nice lookouts and enjoy a two-hour boat ride on the lake surrounded by water lilies and lake birds. After the ride, we will have the opportunity to try fish specialties in the charming town of Virpazar, famous for its wine and fish. It is worth visiting the village of Godinje, whose architecture is the subject of numerous studies, and small family wineries are the perfect place for lovers of new wine flavors, and on our way to Godinje we can visit couple of beautiful lookouts overlooking most of Skadar Lake. It is afternoon now and we are in Podgorica.
On the last day, we will again go to higher altitudes and visit regions that we popularly call "Old Montenegro", the area of Ljuto karst but also beautiful forests, which was a refuge for Montenegrins in centuries of fighting with the Ottomans and other powerful invaders. We will walk through the old core of Cetinje, the historical capital of Montenegro, learn more about the centuries-old struggle of Montenegrins for freedom and independence, the importance of the Cetinje monastery and the Petrovic dynasty and the humor of the people of Cetinje.
We will make a circle around the Montenegrin "Olympus", the holy Lovcen mountain, walk through the eponymous national park, which offers a beautiful view of one of the most beautiful bays in the world, the Bay of Kotor. We will climb the stairs (optional) to the highest mausoleum in Europe, where the most famous Montenegrin in its history, Petar II Petrović Njegoš, is buried.
On the way back we will visit the most famous Montenegrin village Njeguši, the cradle of the Petrovic dynasty, but also famous for prosciutto and cheese, where we will get acquainted with the traditional way of drying prosciutto and have the opportunity to try it.
In the end, we will once again stop by the shores of Lake Skadar, visit the charming coastal town of Rijeka Crnojevića and take a look from the spectacular lookout Pavlova Strana on the meanders of the former Crnojevića river.
