After arriving at the hotel, you will have a free time to explore Sarajevo's city centre, which features a unique, exotic blend of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Modernist architecture and influences. A leisurely walk will take you through charming streets, in which you will be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and try some local culinary favorites such as ćevapi (grilled minced meat) and pita (traditional pie). In the evening, we will meet up at at the hotel’s Sky Bar for a welcome drinks where you will meet your fellow travelers and enjoy a beautiful view of the city. After that you can relax at the hotel and prepare for the exciting activities planned for the next day.
After breakfast at the hotel, we will drive up to Sarajevski Ozren Mountain for a moderate-level, 2-hour hike below and above the stunning Skakavac Waterfall, which at 322 ft (98 m) is the tallest waterfall in the country, the name of which translates charmingly to “grasshopper”. At the end of our hike you will enjoy a lunch with local specialties at a traditional Bosnian mountain lodge. After returning to the hotel for a breather, we will meet again for a guided tour of Sarajevo’s rich historical beauty and vibrant culture. In the first of our winery events, we will drive up one of the sloping hills that surround the city to Hedona Winery, where an 8-course fine dining experience will feature a different wine from the vineyard with each course. The winery boasts both a stunning view of the city below, as well as a vineyard that is home to 3,500 vines that include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Zweigelt.
After breakfast, we will depart from Bosnia and arrive in Herzegovina. There, close to the town of Čapljina, we will enjoy a guided, 2.5 hour canoe safari tour of Trebižat River (a gentle, meandering karst river, known by no fewer than 9 different names along the entirety of its length, reflecting the fact that it seemingly disappears and reappears due to its topography). The friendly guides will lead each boat, as you enjoy the sights of small waterfalls and lush vegetation nurtured by abundant water and endless days of sunshine. Lunch will be served at a charming, secluded place by the river, run by the organizers Kanu Safari. The owners grow 300 kinds of fruits and vegetables. From there, we will travel a short distance to Međugorje. We will wine and dine with a delicious 5-course meal at Carska Vina Grgo Vasilj, also exploring the winery and learning about the various grape varieties they use, such as Žilavka, Traminac, Chardonnay & Cabernet Sauvignon.
After a relatively early start, we will travel to the town of Ravno, where bicycles (regular or electric) will await us at the starting point of Ćiro Trail (formerly a narrow-gauge railway that once ran from Mostar to Dubrovnik, now transformed into a picturesque bike trail). Our 28-mile (45 km) cycle tour is not hilly, making for a relatively easy-going, enjoyable ride with stunning views. A support van will be on hand to transfer luggage and anyone who is unable to cycle. At the halfway point (which is coincidentally the former site of the largest Ćiro train station) we will have a light snacks before continuing to our destination; the picturesque town of Trebinje. Another 5-course meal awaits us at Trebinje’s renowned Podrumi Vukoje, a winery widely recognized for its quality of production, as evidenced by numerous awards. Here, we will enjoy the finest wines from Podrumi Vukoje’s cellars.
After a delightful breakfast, we will head back up the road to the town of Ravno, where we will enjoy a guided tour of Vjetrenica Cave. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots for cave-dwelling fauna, notably subterranean aquatic fauna. As only 4.4 miles (7 km) of this cave has been properly explored, some geologists have suggested that it may even stretch as far as the Adriatic Sea, approximately 10 miles (16 km) away. We will follow this with a traditional lunch at Sedmica close to the town of Jablanica. From there we will move on to the town of Konjic, where we will visit the ARK D-0 bunker, known as “Tito’s Bunker”, a wonderfully preserved, formerly top-secret atomic bunker that was built in total secrecy between 1953-79. After returning to the Hotel Courtyard Marriott in Sarajevo, we will go for a dinner at one of the famous restaurants in Sarjevo – Kibe Mahala.
