Saint Panteleimon Church - the most important information

After the liberation of Nis, the Church of Saint Panteleimon was built on the right bank of the Nisava. In the Nis area of Jagodin mala the construction of this church began in April 1878. Jagodin Mala is located in the city municipality of Pantelej, which was especially widely visited in the interwar period and is known for the extremely cold water that was delivered on donkeys to the neighbouring settlements. The springs of this water are still in the yard of the building and they are believed to have healing powers. The works on the construction of the church were completed on the day of St. Panteleimon, August 8 of the same year, when it was also consecrated.

History of Saint Panteleimon Church
The appearance of the church is completed by a semicircular apse with a rounded vault, a high bell tower with 3 bells built in 1928 and a gallery connected by a wooden staircase. In his travelogues, Felix Kanitz, a travel writer of Austrian origin, describes this church as a building that has a porch with pillars. This porch was originally built but it got demolished some time after Felix's visit (1889). Wood was used for the construction of the first bell tower and the bell was taken from the Turkish clock tower in the Nis Fortress.

The iconostasis was painted in the period between the two world wars when Djordje Jako Zografski and Dusan Milacic worked on the oil paintings. Zografski is a respected artist whose iconostasis can be seen in the church of St. Petka Iverica near Ostrovica, in Orljan, Azbresnica and Balajinac, as well as in the Cathedral Church in Nis.
