Temple of St. George - The most important information
The Church of St. George is another of the famous symbols of Smederevo, which has adorned this city and its square for almost 2 centuries. This temple was built in the image of the Manasija monastery, and occupies the 3rd place in Serbia in terms of size.
History of the temple
The Church of St. George was built in the period from 1850-1854. years. White marble designed by Jan Nevola was used for its construction. The builder of this monumental building was Andreja Damjanov, one of the most important church builders of the 19th century. Many do not know that the Temple of St. George was built not far from the place where the former place of worship was dedicated to the same saint. There was the Great Market, which represented the border between the Serbian and Turkish parts of Smederevo. Also, the Petrijevski stream flowed there on the way to the Danube.
Appearance and features of the temple
The Church of St. George contains 5 domes and a high bell tower on the west side. A sculptural representation of St. George and the dragon is located above the western portal of the temple. The original iconostasis was destroyed during the First World War, but in 1935 it was replaced by a new one, for the production of which Andreja Vasiljevic Bitsenko, a painter from Kiev, is responsible. Among his works, the following compositions stand out: the transfer of the relics of Saint Luke to Smederevo and the Sermon on the Mount, as performances of a strong historical and religious character.
How to get to the temple?
The Church of St. George is located in the center of Smederevo, not far from the Smederevo Gymnasium and the well-known Smederevo Fortress. Whichever side of the city you come from, you will easily spot it as it is located on the main city square. If you are coming from the direction of a bus or train station, you can reach it in less than 5 minutes of easy walking and you will not need any transportation.

The doors of this Orthodox church are open to all believers every day from 6 am to 8 pm.
