Orthodox Church of St. Dimitrije - the most important information

This church dedicated to St. Dimitrije since 1818 is located in Aleksandrovac, a municipality in Subotica on the outskirts of the city. A particularly interesting detail related to this church concerns its artistic elements, around which the greatest Serbian painters were arguing. You can walk from the city center to this church, although that walk is long. On that road you will pass by the city stadium, and not far from the church a cemetery is located. The church is visited in large numbers during the holidays and religious services, and we suggest that you visit it whenever you are in Subotica or its surroundings.

History of the Orthodox Church of St. Dimitrije

The plan for the construction of the church was designed by M. Kosovac, who imagined its appearance in the spirit of classicism. It is a single-nave building with a semicircular altar apse at its base. It contains a semicircular vault and a large bell tower with a gallery. The pilasters are built to emphasize the entrance. From the Church of the Ascension in Subotica, an iconostasis partition was transferred to this church, the origins of which date back to 1766. The iconostasis was made by the baroque painter Jovan Popovic and the conservation of his works was done during the 60s and 90s of the last century. This iconostasis is considered especially valuable, the paintings are inserted into a carved wooden frame decorated with plant motifs.

Significance of the Orthodox Church of St. Dimitrije
This church has been declared a cultural monument of great importance, and the location where it is situated is important for the history of this part of Serbia, as there was an active settlement in the Bronze, Sarmatian and medieval periods. Paja Jovanovic and Uros Predic led the debate on the iconostasis that adorns the interior of the church and its significance. Today, the part of the iconostasis partition that has been modified and shows the apostles Peter and Pavle is kept in the Matica Srpska Gallery in Novi Sad. Among the important icons within the church, "Idol worship" stands out.
