Budva Citadel - the most important information
The citadel was built in the southern part of Budva, in the highest place, they used to call it the city fortress Kaštel, and today it is known only as of the Citadel. The city walls begin and end with the fortress. It has been state-owned for a long time, for a while it was used for performances of the "City Theater" festival, and today it is privately owned and has a variety of catering and museum content.
History of the Budva Citadel
The medieval fortress of St. Mary in Budva, better known as the Citadel, was built in 840. From the original building, only the northern tower and the northern eastern walls have survived to this day. It is first mentioned in historical sources in 1425. It was built to protect Budva from attacks from the sea. For this reason, in the past, she was often called the guardian of Budva.
What to see in the Budva Citadel?
- Austro-Hungarian barracks - dominate the northern part of the Citadel, except for the accommodation of soldiers, it once served as a prison.
- Library - is located on the second floor, has many antique books, and is considered one of the most recognized libraries of its kind in the Balkans.
- Remains of the church of Santa Maria in Castello - the church is almost completely destroyed today, only a few walls remain, raised low from the ground.

How to get to the Citadel?The citadel is located next to the
Old Town in Budva, so the best way to reach it is on foot. From the center of Budva, you will be led by Mediteranska Street, as promenades pass by the hotels Budva, Majestic, and Mogren. Not far from the Citadel there is a parking lot.
