Regional Museum Sokobanja - the most important information
In the very heart of Sokobanja, there is a building that archives valuable data on Serbian history and the history of this region. This institution is simply called Zavicajni Mujez (the Homeland Museum), and here you can see small but really nice arrangements of exhibits from the past of the Sokobanja region.
History of the Regional Museum Sokobanja
The museum is housed in a building that existed before it in the very center of Sokobanja. This building was erected in the 19th century, and it is believed that the famous writer Stojan Zivadinovic once lived in it. To this day, it has retained much of its original appearance. The construction in the old Moravian style fits perfectly with the current purpose of the building, which preserves significant artifacts of the past.
Significance of the Regional Museum Sokobanja
Zavicajni Muzej is a cultural corner of Sokobanja. Although this spa boasts many sights of cultural and historical significance, this museum is an official place where the history of the Serbian spirit, identity, and everyday life is being preserved. With its external appearance, the museum adorns the area of Sokobanja, and with its content, it enriches the knowledge of every visitor.
Museum exhibitions
Documents and objects from different epochs are kept in this museum. In its premises, you can see fine collections of objects from Roman to modern times. There are exhibits from archeological, historical, and ethnological collections.
The permanent exhibition of the museum consists of the following exhibitions:
- Stojan Zivadinovic Memorial Room - an exhibition of furniture and objects used by this famous writer. Among them are his works - novels and collections of stories.
- Exhibition of useful objects from different epochs - jewelry, tools, utensils, weapons, and money from the period of prehistory to the Middle Ages.
- Exhibition of furniture - furniture and objects used by the locals of Sokobanja and its surroundings in the period from the second half of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century.
- Ethno room - an exhibition of folk costumes and traditional tools of the Sokobanja region. Here you can see a device for processing wool and hemp, as well as items for making clothes.
How to get to the Regional Museum Sokobanja?
The museum is very easy to reach because it is located in the very center of the spa.
- By car: from the main road you can turn into Aleksa Markisca Street which leads to the museum.

- On foot: if you are in the mood to walk to the museum, you can reach it via March 27th Street or through the city park.
Additional information
In front of the museum, there is an amphitheater where the Banjsko Kulturno Leto (Cultural Summer) event is being organized. In the amphitheater, you can also attend literary evenings, plays, and musical performances.
