Muselim's konak - the most important information
The oldest preserved building in Valjevo, Muselim's konak, was built at the end of the 18th century. In the basement of this building was a prison that played a significant role in the "slaughter of the knezes" which accelerated the outbreak of the First Serbian Uprising. Today, it is an exhibition space of pieces from both uprisings.
History of the Muselim's konak
The building was erected for the needs of the Turkish governor of Valjevo Nahija, Muselim. It was built of crushed stone, rectangular in shape with two porches. The basement is the same size as the ground floor, where administrative work was done, and was used as a prison. Aleksa Nenadovi and Ilija Bircanin were it’s detainees at the beginning of 1804.
The princes of Valjevo were executed on February 4 on the coast of Kolubara not far from the konak, and their severed heads were returned to the konak and exposed on the roof. Although the slaughter of the knezes was planned to stop the uprising, this act inflamed the revolutionary spirit among the Serbs.
The building was later turned into a school, and after converter works and restoration, it became a separate department of the National Museum of Valjevo.
