Monument to Milovan Glisic - the most important information 

A monument to Milovan Glisic, the editor of the first newspaper in the Knezevina Serbia, has been located in Valjevo since 1968. It is situated along the river Gradac, at the exit from Valjevo towards Uzice. The monument is an important part of every walk around the city and can be visited throughout the year without any payment.

History of the Monument to Milovan Glisic
Milovan Glisic (1847-1908) was a successful Serbian writer and translator. He was born in the village of Gradac near Valjevo. He started his education at home with his parents, as there wasn’t a school in his place of birth. Later, he was immediately admitted to the second grade of elementary school in Valjevo, and he sought higher education in Belgrade. He spoke German, French and Russian and during his life he was engaged in various jobs, from dramaturgy at the National Theater to the position of assistant manager of the National Library.

He entered the sphere of literary work by translating texts in satirical papers, after which he began to write original short stories. His most successful works are the humorous and satirical stories The Head of Sugar, A Walk After Death, After Ninety Years, while important translations include Dead Souls and Taras Buljba by Gogol, Tolstoy's War and Peace and Krajcer's sonata and works by Ostrovsky and Danchenko.

He died in Dubrovnik and his works, letters and manuscripts are kept in the Association "Adligat" in Belgrade. The monument in Valjevo was built by the sculptor Miodrag Zivkovic, it is 3 meters high and it is made of white marble.
