Josanica Monastery - the most important information
Jonasica Monastery is located 10 km from Jagodina, in the gorge of the river of the same name at the foot of the mountain Crni vrh, and is a cultural monument of great importance. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and has a rich history.
History of the monastery Josanica
Although it was first mentioned in the 17th century, it is believed that the monastery was built in the 14th century. During its existence, it was burned and destroyed several times, and then rebuilt:
- It was burned down by the Ottomans at the end of the 17th century, and was rebuilt in 1786;
- During the Austro-Turkish War, it served as the main headquarters of the insurgents who clashed with the Turkish army in the gorge in the spring of 1788, after which they withdrew, and the monastery was burned. Its restoration began after the end of the war in 1791.
- It was damaged again during the First Serbian Uprising, and in the Second Serbian Uprisingknez Milos met with the Turkish Grand Vizier, where they agreed on peace. Knez Milos donated three bells to the monastery.
- During the Serbian-Turkish war of 1876/77. year in the lodgings of the monastery was a hospital.
Appearance of the monastery Josanica
The monastery consists of a church, a wooden bell tower, two lodgings built during the 18th and 19th centuries, two large ponds, barns and an old mill. The monastery also includes the family tomb of knez Miloje Teodorovic, as well as a monument to Serbian warriors from the wars of 1912-1918. years. The church was originally dedicated to Saint Demetrius, it has a single nave base, a semicircular apse on the east and two domes. Its earlier frescoes were covered with plaster in the 19th century, and the remains of government portraits can be seen on the north wall of the narthex.

- You can reach the monastery by your own transport if you follow Milan Mijalkovic Street in Jagodina to the west and pass through the settlements of Vinoraca, Deonica and Siokovac in the direction of Josanicki Prnjavor or
