Mitrovac na Tari, Tara

Nature reserve Crveni Potok - the most important information

Within the Tara National Park, on the Mitrovac plateau, the Crveni potok nature reserve is situated. Slightly more than 23 hectares of this nature reserve are located at 1080 meters above sea level. Since 1950, it has been under state protection as a nature reserve of the first category. The road to this reserve is well arranged and not hard to find.

Characteristics of the Nature reserve Crveni Potok

Peat layers of Crveni potok store fossilized pollen grains. These grains gave scientists an insight into the history of the plant world, climate change in this part of Serbia, as well as habitat conditions on Tara and Serbia. The name comes from the stream that flows through the reserve and in its upper course it crosses the red clay and gets a red color. The rainforest appearance has been preserved because there weren't any intensive forest exploitation until the 1950s. Due to the cold and humid climate in these areas, white moss predominates and with it’s deposits it creates layers of white peat.

Don't miss
The bay where Crveni potok is located is watertight. In combination with excess water, lack of oxygen, acidic environment and low temperature, the decomposition of plant residues is prevented, which is why it settles. A peat bog was created in this place in the reserve and it was named Tepih livade because of the feeling similar to walking on a trampoline. This peat bog is thousands of years old, the accumulation began at the end of the Ice Age and it grows by about 1 mm every year. Walking on it today is forbidden due to the large number of tourist.

The forest is rich in:
  • spruce trees
  • alder trees
  • fir trees
  • Pancic spruce trees
