Piljski waterfall - basic information
The area of Stara Planina is very rich in waterfalls, which often stand tucked away in the forest, and still unexplored by geologists, so mostly only the locals know about them. It was the same with Piljski waterfall, for now the fourth largest waterfall in Serbia, with a height of 64 meters. This waterfall was discovered by geologists in 2002.
Characteristics of Piljski waterfall
Pilj waterfall is located at about 1,400 meters above sea level, below the mountain peak Pilj on Stara planina. It is located on the stream Lisevski dol, and consists of two larger cascades. Although there are no well-maintained tourist trails, this waterfall is a great attraction for tourists. In the vicinity of the village of Topli Do, there are, in addition to this, the waterfalls Čungulj and Kulturski vodopad.
How to get to Piljski waterfall
The terrain on which the waterfall is located is moderately accessible. One part can be crossed by car, ideally by some off-road vehicle, but no doubt you will also have to walk to be able to enjoy the view of this natural phenomenon. The nearest village in the area is Topli Do. You can reach this waterfall without being accompanied by a mountain guide (although this is not the case for all the waterfalls you can visit in the area of Stara Planina).
- It is about 40 kilometers away from Pirot, so you will need to spend about an hour driving, through Temac, along the Temska river, to Topolog Dol.
- From Belgrade you can reach in about 4 hours by car, on the A1 highway, to the turn-off at Crvenčevo, and then through Kumanovo and Temac to Topli Do.
Additional information
Be ready to walk, so dress and put on your shoes accordingly. In addition, remember that you are in nature, so do not throw garbage outside the marked places. If there is no space for garbage disposal, keep it with you, and throw it away when you come across the place prescribed for that.
