Residence of Princess Ljubica - basic information

The residence was built during the reign of Prince Milos Obrenovic, and is named after his wife, Ljubica. Today, this building is one of the symbols of Belgrade, in which objects are still kept that in an authentic way evoke the life of the prince's family during the 19th century.

History of the Residence of Princess Ljubica

The konak was built in 1830, on the site of an old, smaller konak, which was already old and dilapidated. It was supposed to be a courtyard for residence and a place for the prince's family to live. However, due to unfavorable circumstances, the boarding house became a residence only during the reign of Milos's son, Mihailo. After the Obrenovic family was expelled from Serbia, this building served various state institutions. For example, at one time it housed the First Belgrade Gymnasium, the Museum of Prince Paul, the School of Applied Arts, etc. Finally, starting in 1979, the building was renovated and rehabilitated, so the residence became a museum space, part of the Museum of the City of Belgrade.

Permanent exhibition of the Residence of Princess Ljubica
The interior of the lodgings is rich in objects and furniture from the 19th century, which show the influence of Oriental and European style. This is evidenced by the modern furniture located next to the rooms that bear Turkish names, such as the divanhana. The permanent exhibition is called the Interior of Belgrade houses of the 19th century, which, in addition to furniture, also consists of works of fine art, in the form of portraits of rulers and prominent civic families. The building itself is part of the exhibition, because it was built in a typical Serbian-Balkan style. The central halls, which are surrounded by other rooms, are recognizable.
