About the Church of St. Marko
The Church of St. Marko is located near the Chapel of St. Marko from the time of Prince Milos, which was built on the foundations of the old Palilula church, which was considered to be the tomb of Obrenovic family. Construction began during the reign of Alexander I Karadjordjevic, while the interior of the church was decorated after the Second World War. The design of the church was made by the Krstic brothers, following the example of Gracanica, and it stands out with its grandiose dimensions with the idea that this church should be the new throne church of the old Yugoslavia. After the temple of St. Sava, the church of St. Marko is the most impressive building from the late period of Serbian architecture. The church keeps one of the most important collections of icons from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In the vicinity of the church, in 1830, the Sultan's hatisherif was read about the recognition of Serbian autonomy within the Turkish Empire. Due to its special architectural qualities, the church is protected as a cultural monument by the state.
