Museum "Staro Selo" in Sirogojno - the most important information

At the moment when the inhabitants of the Zlatibor region decided to preserve as many old mountain log cabins as possible, a perfect place for that appeared in Sirogojno. A unique village appeared on the location in the settlement, where these old houses were assembled and turned into an open-air museum.

History of the museum
"Staro Selo" was built in 1992 on an area of ​​5 hectares. It is a unique collection of about 50 objects of various types and purposes. It is an interesting fact that the houses that are located in this place today had to be moved from various villages in Zlatibor to be accessible to visitors today.

Significance of the museum
This museum is unique because it is open and looks like a village where time has stood still. As such, "Staro Selo" preserves objects of great importance for the history of architecture, construction, urbanism, but also for tourism itself. Today, it is a beautiful attraction and a protected cultural asset visited by both experts and ordinary tourists.

Museum exhibitions

This museum consists of two parts:

Authentic houses - which have preserved their original appearance and purpose. In this part of the museum you can see old rooms and accompanying facilities that have been actively used in the past:
  • Vajati - a building that sons inherit when they marry
  • Dairies - for storing milk and making dairy products
  • Bakeries - for baking bread and pastries
  • Barns - for storing cereals
  • Farms - for raising animals and storing products
  • Kacare - rooms for making brandy
  • Misane - rooms for drying fruit
  • Stables - for keeping animals
Adapted houses - which have preserved their original appearance, but their function has changed. These facilities are adapted for the needs of tourists and are allowed to use:
  • Souvenir shop - where you can buy some of the handicrafts of this area
  • Pub "Staro Selo" - which offers visitors specialties from Zlatibor prepared in the traditional way
  • Apartments and lodgings - for accommodation and stay of visitors
  • Summer stage - for holding various festivals, exhibitions, performances, etc.
An integral part of this museum is the church Crkva Svetog Petra i Pavla, which is of great spiritual and cultural significance for Sirogojno.

How to get to the museum
The open-air museum is located in the village of Sirogojno, 26 km from the tourist center Zlatibor. You can reach it from several directions.
  • From the direction of Zlatibor: from Zlatibor through Rudina, Sirogojno can be reached in about 30 minutes.
  • From the direction of Uzice: via the road that leads through Rozanstvo and next to Stopica cave. The museum is about a 40-minute drive away.
