Pedagogical Museum - basic information

Meet one of the oldest museum institutions in Serbia, which dates from 1896. The Pedagogical Museum is a very important institution within which data on the development of Serbian education through the centuries are kept. The museum building is located in the very center of the city, so you can easily reach it and visit this truly unique museum of this type in Serbia and the Balkans.

History of the Pedagogical Museum
Teacher Dimitrije Putnikovic came up with the idea to open such a museum during his study trip to the Czech Republic. After getting acquainted with the Czech education system at the time, he came up with the idea of ​​establishing an institution in Serbia that would deal with teacher education and teaching improvement. That is when the School Museum was created. Despite the fact that the previous museum was completely destroyed during the two world wars, it has been renovated today and is known as the Pedagogical Museum. It is housed in a building dating from 1840, primarily ceded to the First Belgrade High School. It is under the protection of the state as a cultural monument, and the museum in it opens its doors to visitors every day.

Exhibition of the Pedagogical Museum

The main activity of the museum is collecting material and studying the education system in Serbia. He is also engaged in publishing, so he has published numerous works related to schooling and education. In addition to all that, he keeps over 50,000 documents, books, writings, photographs and student works important for the development of schooling and pedagogy in his premises, and he also has a permanent exhibition, called Ten Centuries of the Serbian School. It shows the history of Serbian education from the 9th to the beginning of the 20th century, as well as an example of a classroom from the 19th century. Funds and collections that the museum counts:

  • Sector for textbook and pedagogical literature
  • Sector for documentation of educational institutions and media library
Opening hours and ticket prices
Working hours from Tuesday to Saturday are from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm. The museum is closed to visitors on Mondays.

How to get to the Pedagogical Museum
The museum is located in the city center, in Uzun Mirkova Street, across from the Rajićeva shopping center.
On foot: from Trg republike you will need less than 10 minutes, along Vase Čarapića Street and across Studentski trg, to Uzun Mirkova.
