Imperial Palace - the most important information
The Imperial Palace was part of the former Sirmium, a magnificent and powerful Roman city (today's Sremska Mitrovica). This palace is mentioned in the 2nd century, during the stay of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in Sirmium, which then served as a starting point in the war against the barbarians. In Philostratus' text, the palace is mentioned as peri ta basileia, ie the palace in the service of the emperor. Today, Sremska Mitrovica, under its streets and houses, hides traces of the former Sirmium.
Appearance and characteristics of the Imperial Palace
The Imperial Palace was located in the safest place in the city, right next to the Sava River. Full security for the royal retinue was provided by the southern rampart next to the palace, which was specially adapted and fortified. Only a small part of the Imperial Palace with a rectangular base around the inner courtyard was discovered. They are particularly well-conserved central heating apparatus for a hot-air system and a so-called hypocaust, or with masonry or stone columns, which are worn by 2 floorings, and allowed free passage of the heated air. The Imperial Palace also had its own economic part, located on the west side. This complex has only been partially examined, and is located below the Sirmium Hotel.
