History of the National Theater Sombor
The building of the National Theater was erected in 1882, according to the project of Adolf White. This building was built on the initiative of the Joint Stock Company of the Sombor Theater, formed in 1877. It is located in the old town and with its harmonious lines in the classicist spirit it is one of the most representative theaters in Vojvodina. The extension, reconstruction and adaptation of the National Theater was carried out in the late 1970s. Then, by adding another wing, the object got a symmetrical look, in accordance with the spirit of the time in which it was created. The permanent professional theater has been operating since 1946, and grew into the National Theater in 1952.
Appearance and characteristics of the National Theater Sombor
The façade of the building of the National Theater with a monumental façade and 2 wings is accentuated by a porch on the ground floor with a balcony on the first floor and a classicist pediment with Tuscan and Ionic pilasters. The interior is richly finished in baroque style, with painted and stucco decoration. It was modeled on the theaters of Vienna and Pest and is one of the few theater spaces that has been preserved in its authentic form. The National Theater in Sombor has a Big and a Small Stage. The Grand Stage Theater has 330 seats, while the Small Stage can be watched by 100 spectators. A special attraction of this theater is the Theater Marathon festival, which ends every theater season since 1993. Then, during 3 days and nights, all performances of the National Theater, premiered in the previous season, change, as well as performances of guest theaters, theater groups and students of drama faculties.
How to get to the National Theater in Sombor?
- If you start from Belgrade by car, you will travel to the National Theater in Sombor in 2 and a half hours (by highway A1 / E75 and Route 15).
- From Novi Sad to this location, you will need an hour and a half by car, via Route 12.

Ticket prices and opening hours of the National Theater
- The National Theater in Sombor is open from Monday to Saturday (from 10 am to 8 pm).
- Tickets for reruns on the Grand Stage will cost you 500 dinars (ground floor and 1st row of the balcony) and 300 dinars (balcony 2nd, 3rd and 4th row). Students, retirees and the unemployed will have a 50% discount.
