Fontana di Trevi is a fountain in the Trevi district in Rome. It is one of the most famous Baroque sculptures in Rome, and probably the most famous fountain in the world. The fountain is located on the Piazza di Trevi square, and the legend says that those who toss coins into its waters will return to Rome.

About Fontana di Trevi

The Trevi Fountain was designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and finished by Giuseppe Pannini and several others. It was built from 1732 to 1762 against the back of the Palazzo Poli building, on the site where an earlier fountain had been demolished in the 17th century. The fountain is 26.3 meters high and 49.15 meters wide, making it the largest Baroque fountain in the city.

The Trevi Fountain features Pietro Bracci’s statue of Oceanus at the center and statues of Abundance and Health. The water in the fountain is nonpotable today. The fountain is famous because it was featured in numerous books and films. Some of them are Roman Holiday (1953), La Dolce Vita (1960), The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003), and To Rome with Love (2012).

When to visit Fontana di Trevi?

Since the site is very crowded between the hours of 12 pm to 7 pm, it’s probably the best to avoid those times. Consider going before or after that time period. The fountain is illuminated during the night, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to see it. The fountain is usually cleaned early on weekday mornings, between the hours of 6 am to 10 am.

Tossing coins into Fontana di Trevi

It is said that if you toss one coin into the fountain, you will one day return to Rome. If you throw two coins, you will find your love in Rome, while throwing three coins suggests you will get married or divorced. A large portion of the coins from the fountain go to a charity that helps poor families.

What should you know before visiting Fontana di Trevi?

It is forbidden to swim, dangle your feet in the water, eat, or sit on any part of the monument. You can be fined anywhere from 450 Euros for swimming, and 240 Euros for sitting, climbing, or picnicking on the fountain.
If you’re visiting in the time when there is a lot of people, be careful of pickpockets and petty thieves.
