House of Robev - most important information

The House of Robev in Ohrid is one of the most recognizable buildings in the entire city and is also synonymous with urban architecture in North Macedonia. Today, the house is a protected monument of culture and the National Museum in Ohrid. It houses the Archaeological Museum, various ethnological exhibitions, objects, and works of the Ohrid school. The builder of this house was Todor Petkov, and the house was built for two brothers of the Robev family.

History of the House of Robev
This house got its name from the Macedonian family Robev from Ohrid, who was first mentioned in the sources as early as 1379. The original house was built in 1827, and the witness of this is the inscription in Greek letters on the marble slab in the yard. The house was burned to the ground in 1861 by a criminal from Ohrid, Usref Bey.
  • The current shape of the Robev houses dates back to 1863: In this year, a place with its recent appearance was built, and the two Robev brothers, Konstantin and Atanas, lived there. The leading builder was Todor Petkov, and the interior, ceilings, furniture, wardrobes, and other decorative elements were created according to his idea. The family lived in the house until 1900 when they moved to Bitola.
  • During the First World War, the Serbian army stayed in the house: Throughout its history, the house had different purposes. The Balkan wars and the First World War forced the Serbian army to hide in this house, their refuge from 1913 until 1919. After the Second World War, the home was protected as a cultural and historical monument, and in 1953 it was nationalized and handed over to the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments and the National Museum in Ohrid for permanent use.
The importance of the House of Robev
Today, the House of the Robes is a protected cultural monument and contains many valuable items. Namely, it consists of three floors and an upper floor, while the lower part displays the epigraphic monuments of Ohrid and its surroundings. Some exhibits date back to prehistory and the Middle Ages.

How to get to the House of Robev?
The House of the Robes is located near the shore of Lake Ohrid, not far from Saraiste Beach. It can be reached by car from any direction of Ohrid and on foot.
  • By car: If you are coming from the direction of Varos, you need to follow Kuzman Kapidan Street and then turn into Klimentov Univerzitet Street. From the tip of Vidobiste, the road will lead you through the streets of Risto Cado, 7mi Noemvri, and Bulevar Makendonski Prosvetiteli. You need to drive all the way to Car Samoil Street, where this building is located.
