Lovcen National Park - The most important information
Lovcen National Park is one of the most famous in Montenegro and is extremely important precisely because of its exceptional natural, but also cultural and historical characteristics. This National Park was founded in 1952. Its exceptionality is also reflected in its location, because it is located at the junction of the Mediterranean and continental climates, but also at the border between the land on one side and the sea on the other. The Lovcen National Park is located in the southwestern part of Montenegro, not far from the city of Cetinje and covers an area of about 62.2 square kilometers.
The importance of Lovcen National Park
Precisely because of its incredible location, but under the influence of the climate, a rich endemic living world has developed in this area.
- Flora - There are about 1,300 plant species in the national park, which makes up ⅓ of the total flora in Montenegro. A large number of plant life is endemic, but there are also medicinal, honey-bearing and aromatic plants.
- Fauna - However, there is also a significant number of endemic species of fauna. Wolf, fox, roe deer, boar, bear, white-breasted hedgehog live in this area, as well as about 200 species of birds, 11 species of reptiles, 5 species of amphibians and many more species of butterflies, ants and flies.
- Historical monuments - Also, on Jezerski vrh (1657 mi) there is the famous mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic Njegos.
Appearance of Lovcen National Park
Lovcen National Park, which covers an area of about 62.2 square kilometers, consists of 5 separate zones with a special regime of use and management:
- Munike pine forest reserve (at the foot of Stirovnik and Jezerski vrh)
- Forest reserve of beech, cetiny and rare larch trees (space between Jezerski vrh, Stirovnik, Trestenicki vrh, Babnjak and Golis)
- Beech Forest Reserve (Konjsko)
- Krivja pine forest reserve (space between Rupa and Blatiste at about 1,100m above sea level)
- Herpetological reserve (Lake below Jezerski vrh)
What to see in Lovćen National Park?
Lovcen National Park is a place where memories of one of the most important ruler of Montenegro - Njegos - are preserved. In addition to natural beauty, this national park is also important historically.
- Mausoleum on Lovcen - The mausoleum is located on Jezerski vrh and was built during the lifetime of Petar II Petrovic Njegos. According to his wish, a chapel was built on the top where Njegos wanted to rest after his death. Prince Danilo fulfilled that wish. This chapel was demolished and rebuilt several times, and after 1925 there was a desire to build a monumental monument. The mausoleum was opened in 1974, and a 20 km road and as many as 461 steps lead to it. That is why a visit to this mausoleum represents a kind of pilgrimage.

Lovcen National Park is open 24 hours a day. Entrance to Lovcen National Park is charged:
- The ticket price is 2 EUR
- Children under seven years old can enter for free.
How to get to Lovcen National Park?
You can reach Lovcen National Park:
- By car - If you are coming from the direction of Ivan's trough, take the route via Krstac pass, then to Kotor-Njegusi-Cetinje. From Cetinje, turn onto the Lovcen road that will take you to the Lovcen National Park.
- By bus - You can only get to Cetinje by bus, there is no direct line that connects the city center with Lovcen National Park.
- Taxi service - If you decide to take a taxi, it will take you to the entrance of the national park and the price is around 20 EUR.
