Millennium Cross - The most important information

The Millennium Cross is 66 meters high on top of the Vodno mountain (1,066 m) that rises above Skopje. The cross was built in 2002 on the 2000th anniversary of Christianity in Macedonia and the world. The Millennium Cross can be seen at a distance of 30 km.

History of Millennium Cross
Construction began in 2002 and was financed by the Macedonian Orthodox Church, the Macedonian government, and donors from Macedonia and worldwide. The cross was built on the highest point of the Vodno mountain at the place Krstovar - the Turkish name for "Place of the Cross" because there was a smaller cross before the Millennium Cross. The plan and project for the construction of the cross were developed by the famous architects Oliver Petrovski and John Stefanowski-Jean. The Millennium Cross is one of the most beautiful monuments in North Macedonia. The attraction was built in 2002., in honor of the fact that 2,000 years ago, the inhabitants of Macedonia adopted Christianity.

How to get to the Millennium Cross?
  • By cable car: Since the middle of 2011, Vodno can be climbed by cable car. Due to technical maintenance, the cable car does not work on the last Tuesday of the month. The cable car is three and a half kilometers long. The ticket price is about 100 denars for adults, and the opening hours in the summer months are 10-20h. Departures are very frequent.
  • On foot: You can reach the Millennium Cross from Srednje Vodno (a parking lot is nearby). However, you should know that a climb takes about 2 hours.
Additional information
On September 8, 2008, the day of independence of the Republic of Macedonia, an elevator was built into the cross so that you can get to the very top and the panoramic view by elevator. If you are an enthusiast and want to enjoy the scenery, you can reach the top on foot. Since 2009, a restaurant and souvenir shop have been opened next to the cross.
