Nisava - the most important information

Being 218 km long, Nisava flows through Serbia and Bulgaria and belongs to the Black Sea basin. Due to its length, it is the longest tributary of the South Morava and the majority of the basin (73.7%) belongs to Serbia. There is a controversy about the origin of the name Nisava. It is believed that the city of Nis was named after this river because its ancient name is Navissus. Also, one idea is that the name originated from the Thracian language and thus opposes the idea that the name of the river is similar to the hydronym from the Celtic language. Today Nisava is not a navigable river, but due to its many small tributaries, it has hydrographic significance in this area.

The origin of  Nisava
It springs on the Stara Planina below the top of Kom at an altitude of 2,000 meters. Nisava enters Serbia at the Gradina border crossing. In its course, it connects Godec, Dimitrovgrad, Pirot, Bela Palanka, Niska Banja and Nis. The Nisava basin stretches from the elevation of the Kamenica watchtower in the north, through the confluence of the Nisava into the South Morava in the west and the elevation in the Ginska basin in the east, to the top of Krvavi kamen in the south.

In its asymmetric basin Nisava has 11 tributaries on the left and 5 on the right. The two components of the Nisava are the Ginska River on the right and the Vrbnica on the left side.
Nisava is surrounded by river basins that are mostly Black Sea, and some also belong to the Aegean basin. Among them are the basins of the Toponicka river, Svrljiski and Trgoviski Timok, Ogosta and Iskar, Gradska and Pusta rivers.

The Nisava Valley is part of the Via Militaris natural road, which has connected Europe and Asia since ancient times and goes to Istanbul. Nisava is useful for drainage of atmospheric and industrial waters and for soil irrigation. The aspect of water supply makes Nisava especially important for the area downstream from Bela Palanka.

The most beautiful places by Nisava
Alongside Nisava, gorges and valleys alternate, such as the Dimitrovgrad and Pirot valleys, the Sicevo gorge and the Zdrelo gorge. Within the Sicevo gorge a Paleolithic settlement was discovered in the small cave Balanica, which is considered the richest in the Balkans. In addition, in Sicevo is the monastery of the Holy Mother of God from 1644 and the church of St. Petka in the village of Ostrovica. According to the plans of Nikola Tesla and George Stanojevic, two small hydroelectric power plants were built in theSicevo gorge in 1908, which are still used today to supply electricity.

Nisava does not have a beach in Nis, but there are places where people decide to swim and spend time. Swimmers can most often be seen near the bridge in Bulevar Mediana and near the Roda shopping center. The approaches to these beaches are improvised and often have narrow roads leading to them with bad terrain. Due to the nature of the access, as well as the quality of the water, going to these wild beaches can be advised only at your own risk.

Along the Nisava quay are located ethno restaurants Nisavska koliba, Ethno house Biser and restaurant Gusar where you can enjoy good food and an even better view.
