Vrmdzanski Grad - the most important information
Near the village of Vrmdza, near Sokobanja, there are unusual remains of an old fortification. The locals call this place Latinski Grad (Latin City), and its history is covered with a veil of legend. Although in ruins, this place attracts curious visitors who cannot resist approaching the remains of the walls that lie on a steep limestone rock.
History of Vrmdzanski Grad
Very little is known about this fortification. It is believed to date from the reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinian (4th century) and was built as a defense against the Avars and Slavs. Because of that, the locals of Vrmdza gave it the name Latin City, after the Latins - another name for the Romans who built it.
In the Middle Ages, the regions of Vrmdza, Bovan, and Kosovo were ruled from this fortification. Then, in 1413, the fortress was completely destroyed. After a long siege, Vrmdzanski Grad was conquered by Musa Kesedzija, which cut its long historical thread. In these destructions of the fort, many traces of history were lost forever, so the Vrmdza fortress is still a rather unexplored monument.
