The residence of Nikola I Petrovic Njegos was built in 1891 and is located in Podgorica in the central part of Petrovic Park. The Moraca River flows along this complex. The castle used to be the official winter residence of the last king of Montenegro. Today it is the most prestigious art gallery in the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica.

The castle of the ruling Petrovic family in Krusevac is one of the most beautiful parts of Podgorica. This area, where the complex was built, used to be called Krusina glavica. In 1886, Prince Nikola bought the land. The castle was built after the liberation from the Turks. The beginning of construction was set for April 20, 1891, when the foundation stone was laid. The works were completed in 1894. This castle was turned into a hospital from the refuge of Petrovic, where the son of Prince Nikola, Prince Mirko, lived for several years, then into the Gallery of Art of Non-Aligned Countries Josip Broz Tito, in 1983. Today, this space is the Center for Contemporary Art of Montenegro.

After the completion of the works, the construction of the first telegraph station in Podgorica began in the auxiliary building of the castle, while in 1895 the first telephones were installed in the castle. Today, in addition to the Center for Contemporary Art, the palace complex also houses an exhibition space, a botanical garden and a music pavilion.

The complex on Krusevac consists of several buildings, the most important of which are certainly the castle itself, which was built on two floors, Perjanicki dom, the church of St. Dimitrije, whose founder was Prince Nikola, the park-forest. There are also several ancillary facilities. The entire complex is located on the right bank of the river Moraca, and is surrounded by a park-forest with many benches, fountains… So far, several important reconstructions have been made.

How to get to the Palace of King Nikola in Krusevac?
This attraction is located at Park Petrovic in Podgorica, Montenegro and the easiest way to reach the complex, but also the castle is:
  • By car - Own transport from the center of Podgorica to this fairytale complex takes 6 minutes. The distance is about 1.7 kilometers. Take Kralja Nikola Street to the Sahat-kula, which will be on your right. After it, turn into the first right street, Petra Prlje Street. When you reach the end of the street, you will find a large intersection where you turn right. Drive along Union Bridge, cross the bridge and turn left at the first intersection near the US Embassy. On your right you will see Petrovic Park.
  • By foot - If you still decide for an easy walk and a tour of the city along the way, it takes about 20 minutes from the center to the Petrovic complex. Go on foot along Sloboda Street, then turn right along Sveti Petar Cetinjski Boulevard. The road takes you to the bridge of Blaze Jovanovica. After crossing the bridge, turn left into Ivana Milutinovica Street. At the crossroads, continue straight where the American Embassy will be on your left, and a little lower, on the right side of Petrovic Park.
