The Cathedral of Christ's Ascension is the main and largest Orthodox church in Podgorica. This church belongs to the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral, and it is dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ. The construction was completed in 1993, and the main architect was Dr. Predrag Ristic. Due to its monumentality and beauty, the church became famous throughout Europe and the world. It is a place of pilgrimage for many Orthodox believers and is one of the cultural monuments that you must not miss in Montenegro.

History of the Cathedral of Christ's Ascension in Podgorica
The main idea was to build the temple before the war, but the Second World War interrupted all important plans and works. After the war, new problems arose when the communist government confiscated land, which was in church ownership. After that, troubles and problems continued to subside, because the temple could not fit into the urban plan of the city. The conceptual solution was set by the architect Dr. Predrag Ristic and with the blessing of Metropolitan Amfilohije, the construction began in 1993, on the foundations dug a long time ago. Over the years, the temple has been visited by many important and influential people of the Church.

The Cathedral of Christ's Ascension is dominated by two towers (pirge) 26.7 meters high. There are 17 bells in their attics. The largest bell weighs about 11 tons and is the largest bell on the Balkan Peninsula. At the foot of the tower are small churches dedicated to St. Simeonu Mirotocivom  and St. Jovanu Vladimiru. There is also a baptistery in the church dedicated to Saint Simeonu Mirotocivom.

One of the largest and most interesting galleries of stone sculpture on sacral buildings is located in this church. The fresco painting was done in the fresco technique, and the background is gilded. The mosaic technique also stands out and was largely used to decorate the interior of the church. In addition to the floor mosaic, the entrance portal of the templ, which is dominated by the scene of the Resurrection of Christ, to which the temple is dedicated, is decorated in that technique.

It is possible to reach the Cathedral of Christ's Ascension:
  • By car - Own vehicle takes about 10 minutes drive from the center of Podgorica to the temple. The distance is 2 km, and it is possible to reach via Bulevar Sveti Petar Cetinjski, Bulevar Blaža Jovanovića or Bulevar Ivana Crnojevića.
  • By foot - If you still do not want to get into a bigger crowd by car, we suggest you take an easy walk from the center of Podgorica to the temple. The walk will not last long, it takes about 20 minutes to cover 2 km. The temple can be reached by the main boulevards: St. Petar Cetinjski Boulevard, Blaž Jovanović Boulevard or Ivan Crnojević Boulevard.
  • By bus - Depending on which part of the city you come to the temple from, you can use the following public transport lines: 5, 8, 9, 10.
