Gospa od Skrpjela-Most important information

The island, which is adorned with the Roman Catholic Church of the same name, is located opposite Perast. It represents one of the main tourist attractions in this part of the Adriatic, and next to the church you can still see a museum and a souvenir shop.

History of Gospa od Skrpjela
Two local fishermen came across a rock on which they found an icon of the Virgin Mary. They took it to Perast, but the icon disappeared. As soon as they sailed the next time by the sea, they found the icon in its original place. The news about the miracle spread, so the citizens decided to build a Church in that place as a sign of gratitude to the Holy Mother of God. However, the area was not suitable for building a church, so the local sailors, honoring this place, threw stones and an artificial island was made in the middle of the sea. The church on the island was initially built as an Orthodox church, and later it was renovated by the Venetians and turned into a Roman Catholic Church.

Characteristics of Gospa od Skrpjela
There is a chapel inside the church, and visitors can enjoy the works of Italian masters, paintings by Trip Kokolj - a local baroque artist from the 17th century, the original icon of Gospa od Skrpjela and numerous tapestries.
