Suvodol Monastery - Most important information

The Suvodol Monastery is located in the atar of the village of Selacke, about 25 km from Zajecar. It is a cultural monument dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary's birth. There are as many as three caves near the monastery, and it also represents an immovable cultural asset. It is located below Janosica, Vetren, and Treska, on the northern side of the Manastirska glava mountain.

History of Suvodol Monastery
There is more information and theories about the time of the creation of the monastery itself, but also its founder. Some historians claim that the church was built at the time of the conquest of Byzantium, and the locals of that area claim that it is the endowment of Nemanjic.
  • The renovation of the church began in 1866: The construction of the new church began in August 1866, during the reign of Mihailo Obrenovic, and Bishop Evgenije Simonovic consecrated it in 1869.
  • Within the monastery, there are several inns of great importance: The first and, at the same time, the oldest inn that was built here dates back to 1880 and is made from the rest of the bricks during the construction of the church. A new and larger inn was built on the same site until 1999, thanks to the efforts of the elders of the monastery and the abbess. The second guest house was built in 1920 and is used to receive guests to the monastery during major holidays. In addition to a few other inns, within the monastery, there is also a chapel dedicated to the holy king Milutin.
Significance of Suvodol Monastery
The Suvodol Monastery today represents one of the essential Orthodox treasures on the soil of Serbia. Throughout history, it was demolished and abandoned several times, and the dedicated locals and the abbess always managed to restore the monastery and preserve the most valuable things.
  • Suvodol Monastery is an excellent treasure of Orthodoxy: The oldest object in the monastery is Marin's Evangelist on parchment, which dates back to the 14th century. This document, as well as the Oktoich, are kept in SAN today. In the middle of the 19th century, there were 34 liturgical books and ten large icons in the monastery.
How to get to Suvodol monastery?
Suvodol Monastery is located not far from Zajecar, in the village of Selacka. It is possible to reach it by car.
  • By car: If you are leaving Belgrade, you must take the E75 highway to Glavica, where you turn off onto the E761 road. From Zajecar, you need to follow route 35, which will take you to the village of Selacka, where you will see a signpost to the monastery.
