The Church of St. Marko is a cultural monument of great importance located in Uzice, in the part of the town of Carina. It is also called the Old Church and is dedicated to the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Marko.
History of the Church of St. Marko
The old church was first built on the site of the present church in 1721, which was burned down at the time when the Turks ruled Uzice. The current church was built on its foundations in 1828, during the time of knez Milos Obrenovic, and in 1890, a Uzice planter built a wooden bell tower that is 22 meters high.
Characteristics of the Church of St. Marko
The church was built in a simple style and contains many icons and liturgical objects such as bowls, crosses, chandeliers, incense burners and gold-embroidered blankets. Some of the icons in the church are the Italo-Cretan Christ the Almighty from the 16th century, the Mother of God with Christ and St. John the Baptist, St. Archdeacon Stephen.
It was built with consumables such as bricks and wood, and has been renovated several times. In the last renovation, a new iconostasis made of oak wood, an icon, a bishop's throne and a throne for a kissing icon were made.
In the church you can see a collection of engravings from the 17th to the 19th century, objects of applied art and works by Uzice goldsmiths.
