Kanli Kula - The most important information

One of the most popular places in Montenegro, which annually attracts millions of tourists from all over the world, is the Kanli Kula in Herceg Novi. The name of the fortress translated from Turkish means bloody tower. It is located on top of a mountain in the northern part of the Old Town, at 85 meters above sea level, and offers a view of the entire city.

History of the Kanli Kula
It was built in 1539 by the Turks and during the Ottoman Empire, there was a notorious prison, where fighters for the liberation of Montenegro were tortured and killed. The prison door was believed to open in only one way and it was impossible to escape. During the sixties of the 20th century, the fortress was reconstructed and opened to visitors as an open-air museum, and the courtyard was turned into a summer amphitheater. The summer stage was designed for 1000 seats and today it is one of the most beautiful summer stages on the entire Adriatic coast.

Why visit the Fortress?
Today, the tower hosts various events, film and music festivals, concerts, folklore performances, and many others. Two years ago, visitors were given the opportunity to step into the Middle Ages and see what the centuries-old fortress and the city looked like throughout history. All this is made possible through a high-tech center.

Opening hours and ticket prices
The fortress is open during the summer season, from May to September, from 09:00 to 19:00. The ticket price for adults is 2 euros, while the entrance for children under 12 is free.

How to get to Kanli Kula?
It is impossible to bypass the fortress, because it is located along the main road E65. There are two entrances to the fortress, through the northern gate, which was created as a result of the reconstruction of the northern wall, or through the small southern gate of the Old Town, which leads to many steps. You can reach it:
