Jasunjski monasteries - Most important information
The Jasunjski monasteries are a monumental complex located near Leskovac, near the village of Jasunja. The Jasunjski monasteries consist of two from the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, namely the Monastery of the Vavedenje Presvete Bogorodice and the Monastery of Sveti Jovan Preteca.
History of the Jasunjski monasteries
The Monastery of Vavedenje Presvete Bogorodice was built in 1499, while the Monastery of Sveti Jovan Preteca was built in 1517. It is believed that one monastery was constructed as a female monastery, while the other was a male one, and there was a dining hall between them.
- The origin of these monasteries is connected with the Kantakouzin family: According to existing sources, it is believed that one monastery was built by a certain Andronik Kantakuzin together with his brothers. In contrast, the monk Xenia created the female monastery with her sisters.
The importance of the Jasunjski monasteries
Since today there are not enough sources about the creation of monasteries, their history still needs to be more known to the public. However, since 1983, the Jasunjski monasteries have been under the protection of Serbia as a cultural monument of great importance.
How to get to the Jasunjski monasteries
The Jasunjski monasteries are less than half an hour's drive from Leskovac. It is possible to reach them by car.
- By car: If you are traveling from the central part of Leskovac, you need to follow Zikica Jovanovic Spanac street until you exit the city. After that, continue along Vlada Djokic Street through Bogojevci and Zlokucane, which will bring you to the village of Jasunja. Monasteries are located near the village.
