History of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
The Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God is one of the oldest buildings in Zrenjanin. It was built in 1746, during the reign of Maria Theresa. This temple was built of bricks, and thanks to that, it was spared in a terrible fire in 1807, when almost all wooden houses in Zrenjanin burned down. It was the only temple in the Diocese of Timisoara covered with tiles.

Appearance and characteristics
The Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse, a rectangular choir and a narthex above which rises a high baroque bell tower, with an ornate cap. The harmony and balance of the western façade was achieved by combining calm lines of pilasters, finished with profiled capitals, blind semicircular niches, corner pillars and a cordon cornice with rounded gable shapes and a richly profiled roof cornice. The painter from Bečkerek, Georgije Popović, was in charge of the painted decoration of the iconostasis from 1815, while the author of the lace carving remained unknown. The icons represent scenes from the Old and New Testaments in 3 zones. It is assumed that Georgije Popović also made 7 kissing icons with the oil technique on a wooden base. These icons have been under the protection of the Cultural Monuments Act since 1951.
