History of the monastery of St. Roman
The monastery was built before Nemanjic, and was first mentioned in 1011 in the chrysostom of Emperor Vasilije II. It was named after Saint Roman, who lived there as a monk, and his relics are also kept in the monastery church. The monastery was first renovated in 1377 by order of knez Lazar. However, it was burned, destroyed several times, and then rebuilt during the rule of the Turks, and during the Austro-Turkish war it was demolished to its foundations. It was restored in 1795 by George Pile as a sign of gratitude for being healed there. The last fresco was made in 1831, while the frescoes from 1795 can still be seen in the domes and choirs. The monastery has been female since 1960, before becoming male again in 2012.
