Vernjikica Cave - the most important information

Vernjikica Cave is located in eastern Serbia near Bor. It is positioned on the left side of Lazarus Canyon, at 454 meters above sea level. The name of the cave comes from the Vlach word var, which means limestone. It is one of the dry caves in the canyon.

Characteristics of the cave Vernjikica
The first research of the cave began in 1960, and for the needs of tourism it was arranged in 1976. The cave is made of limestone and consists of several halls and narrowings. Some of the most important halls are the Colosseum, Abyss, Marble, Weapon Hall. The Colosseum is the highest hall in caves in Serbia and it contains some of the most interesting shapes that have equally interesting names such as the Caveman or the Hive. Vernjikica is known for a large number of stalactites of various colors, such as the one in one of the halls, Vilingrad, a red staircase eight meters high. 

The cave also gave magnificent forms of coral structure in the shape of a spear, arrow or dagger, which in full light show the imagination of Mother Nature. Remains of numerous members of the fossil fauna, such as the cave bear, land crab, spider and centipede, can also be found in the cave. Today, bats mostly live here. Vernjikica can be reached by a well-maintained footpath that is connected to Lazarus Cave. This cave, like the canyon itself, is protected by law.

How to get to the Vernjikica cave?
The road to the Vernjikica cave requires a little more effort, so the following way is recommended:
  • By car: The cave can be reached by a one-hour drive from Bor, through the village of Zlot.
  • On foot: At the end of the road for cars, it is necessary to walk about forty minutes on a well-maintained path.
Additional information
Entering the cave is possible with organized groups of seven to twelve people led by a trained person. The equipment requires a helmet with a light, appropriate footwear and overalls.
