Obedska bara - the most important information
Obedska bara is about 40 kilometers away from Belgrade. It is located between the settlements of Kupinovo, Obrez, Grabovci and the Sava River, in southeastern Srem. The narrower area of Obedska bara consists of the Potkovica riverbed and the higher part of the terrain of the Kopito blackberry beam. This special nature reserve covers an area of almost 10 thousand hectares. The bed of Obedska bara is the remnant of the abandoned bed of the river Sava, whose main course today flows further south. 6,000 years ago, the forerunner of the Sava River flowed in this place, 4 and a half thousand years ago its side course, while 2,000 years ago a dead body was formed, from which a swamp that we now call Obedska bara was created.
Reserve history
The Austro-Hungarian court declared Obedska bara an imperial hunting ground and protected it in 1874. After several decades, this place became a protected royal hunting ground of the Karadjordjevic dynasty, while in 1951 it was declared a protected reserve. The current status of the Special Nature Reserve Obedska bara was acquired in 1993, when it was divided into 3 parts with different degrees of protection. Also, Obedska bara was entered in the list of wetlands of international importance in 1977, while in 1989 it was included in the list of areas of exceptional importance for the birds of Europe.

A total of about 58 thousand pairs of birds were counted at this place, such as: spoon heron, little white heron, black stork, white stork, white-tailed eagle, red-tailed eagle and others. Among the rare plant species, white and yellow water lilies, aldrovanda, marsh orchid and marsh nettle stand out. One black poplar tree is protected as a natural monument.
