Dubnica Monastery - the most important information
The monastery of the Milesevo diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church is located in the village of Bozetici on the slopes of Mount Javor. Near this village is Lake Sjenica. The monastery was renovated in 2007 and is open for visits. It is only 20 km away from Nova Varos, and the Uvac Special Nature Reserve can be reached from it with a short drive.
History of the Dubnica Monastery
It is believed that the monastery was founded in the 14th century. There are records of its previous condition that describe a building with rosettes, carved portals and altar niches that may be of royal origin. At the beginning of the 15th century, the Dubnica Monastery was built on the foundations of an old building that was located there. The date on the remains of the fresco proves that the monastery was built and decorated with an iconostasis in 1422. Most of that building has not been preserved.
The monastery was on the rise during the time of Patriarch Gavril Rajic-Raskovic, who was the founder of the monastery. History connects the origin of the monastery with the Nemanjic family and their old endowments, which were restored by the Raskovic family.
Conservation works carried out by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments from Kraljevo were done before the beginning of the renovation of the monastery in 2003. With the help of the Milesevo Diocese, the Municipal Assembly of Nova Varos and private donors, the renovation was completed in 2007. According to the project of the architect Veljko Vuckovic, the monastery was built of stone and whitewash from the ground up.
