Kamena Gora - The most important information
In the extreme southwest of Serbia, near Prijepolje and Nova Varos, the mountain Kamena Gora rises. This is a place of exceptionally preserved nature, where life takes place far from the city squares and the hustle and bustle of modern life. The landscape of Kamena Gora is characterized by large areas under forests and meadows, from which the local population continues to receive benefits.
Characteristics of Kamena Gora
Kamena Gora is located at an altitude of about 1,000 meters, while the highest peak, Ravna gora, rises to 1,496 meters. Ravna gora represents, so to speak, the natural border between Serbia and Montenegro. In 2014, the mountain was declared a landscape of exceptional features, so it is under state protection. It is characterized by deep gorges, mosaically arranged forest and meadow surfaces, which can be proud of their distinct beauty. In addition, the air, and even the water, are very clean here, so passing by the spring, you can catch drinking water without fear of whether it is good to drink. Large areas under forests such as sessile, beech, fir and spruce forests are a perfect habitat for a large number of wildlife and over 100 bird species. However, among all the trees, one tree stands out. It is a pine, especially because of its age, which is over 500 years old.
Holy pine
The black pine that rises on this mountain of stone carries great value. It is a pine that is over 500 years old, and which the inhabitants of the village of Kamena Gora gave the name Sveti bor or Svetibor. It is believed to have healing and healing properties, which is why it is a kind of holy place for the locals. This is the oldest pine in Serbia, but in addition to age, it can also boast of height. With the canopy, this tree rises to 18 meters.
The village of Kamena Gora
There is also a village of the same name on the mountain, which welcomes curious guests, but stays away from commercial tourism. The Holy Pine is located in it, but it is not the only attraction. This village is perfect for adventurers who love hiking, mountaineering, picking herbs and enjoying the pristine rural tourism. Although it has about 100 inhabitants, they are ready to help every passenger. There are a number of activities you can do on this mountain, and among them are paragliding, cycling, hunting and fishing, climbing.
What else to visit on Kamena Gora?
- Ethno village Guvnište - a village filled with houses built of natural materials, primarily from planks and logs, in front of which there are guvna (space for threshing grain), after which the village got its name. Nearby is the camp Kovčica, which offers tourists accommodation in a natural environment.
- Mileseva Monastery - endowment of King Vladislav, in which the famous fresco of the White Angel is kept.
- Davidovica Monastery - a monastery special because the bodies of the Jugović brothers rest in it.
How to get to Kamena Gora?
- By car: it takes a little less than 5 hours, on the road leading to Nova Varos, then Prijepolje, then through Kosevina, Ratajska, Osoje and Kasice. From Nova Varos you will need about an hour's drive along the same route. With departure from Prijepolje, set aside about half an hour for the ride.
