Church of the Ascension of Christ - the most important information

The Church of the Ascension of Christ was built in 1856, and is located in the center of Mionica, a town about 20 km away from Valjevo. This church was built during the reign of Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic and his wife, Princess Persida, who gave her a lavish cross on the throne and a gift box. The Church of the Ascension of Christ played a very important role during the First World War, especially during the Battle of Kolubara. At that time, the church tower served as an observatory for Duke Živojin Mišić. This Orthodox church has had the status of a cultural monument since 1962.

About the history of Mionica and the characteristics of the church
Did you know that Mionica was called Tuvari for some time in the Middle Ages and that the Serbian prince Lazar called this settlement Mali Srem, because the beauty of this area reminded him of the hospitality of the local lord? The village was deserted during the time of the Turks, and, according to tradition, a man Zivko from Užice's Mionica moved in and transferred the name of his native village to this place. In the 19th century, when the Church of the Ascension of Christ already existed in Mionica, the town had less than 40 houses. This church is known for the icons of the Valjevo painting school, whose representatives are Hadzi Ruvim and Petar Nikolajevic Moler.

How to get to the Church of the Ascension of Christ?
  • Mionica is about 90 kilometers away from the Serbian capital. You can reach this town in 3 ways: by car, bus or train.
  • If you travel by car from Belgrade, it will take you an hour and 20 minutes to arrive (by highway Miloš Veliki).
  • However, if you decide to travel by bus or train, you can only go to Divci (the carriers Lasta and Europa bus will be at your disposal). From Divci to Mionica you can call a taxi service, as the distance between these 2 places is very small. We recommend: Mija taxi (064 1121465), Goran (060 7205555) or Taxi transport Mionica (064/9267071).
Additional information
In addition to the Church of the Ascension of Christ, the municipality of Mionica is adorned with other Orthodox shrines: the Church of St. Nicholas, the Church of St. Spyridon the Wonderworker, the log cabin church dedicated to the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God, and the Ribnica Monastery. Every year in July, this municipality is the patron of the popular tourist event Mišić's Days, which is held in honor of Duke Živojin Mišić, an unforgettable Serbian military leader from the First World War.
