St. George's Church - the most important information
The Cathedral Church of St. George is the seat of the Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Krusevac and represents the main, and at the same time the largest Orthodox church in Krusevac.
History of the Church of St. George
The first mention of the church of St. George is when the plots of the inhabitants of Krusevac were bought for the construction of a new church. However, the construction of the church began only in 1885, it was built and placed under the roof in 1898, three bells were paid in 1902, the contract for the construction of the iconostasis was signed in 1903, and the church was completely finished in 1904. The church was built according to the project of the architect Dusan Zivanovic.
In 2015, the fresco painting of the church dome was completed, and in 2019, the facade was painted in bright red.
Characteristics of the Church of St. George
The church was built in the Serbian-Byzantine style, and the facades are modeled on the Moravian school. It was made in the shape of a free cross with five domes. The icons have been preserved to this day, and there is a clear difference in style between the upper and throne icons, so it is believed that one was made by Zivko Jugovic, and the other by Milan Milanovic. Twelve frescoes can be seen on the walls. Until the end of the Second World War, the church had a wooden fence, which was then replaced with stone and decorative iron.
How to get to the church of St. George
The Cathedral of St. George is located near Kosturnica. There is no stop near the church, but there are three stops nearby: Rasinski trg, Fontana and Nova pijaca and the buses that have a stop there are: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 6a, 7, 8, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, 20. Alternatively zou can use the local taxis like Next Taxi which you can reach on two numbers: 037/434343 and 063/443337.
