Captain Misa's mansion is a building that was built in the 19th century and today houses the Rectorate of the University of Belgrade, as well as a part of the Faculty of Philology and Philosophy. It is located near Knez Mihailova Street and Student Park.
History of Captain Misa's mansion
Captain Misa's mansion is a palace that was built between 1858 and 1863 by order of Captain Misa Anastasijevic, who wanted to build it for the court of a ruling couple that was not destined - his daughter Sara and Djordje Karadjordjevic. However, the Obrenovics were returned to power, so Captain Misa donated the palace for educational purposes. The architect was the Czech Jan Nevole, and the designer was Josif Steinlehner.
In 1863, the Great School was moved to the building, then the Gymnasium, the Ministry of Education, Realka, the National Library, the National Museum and other cultural and educational institutions of the then Principality of Serbia. Important historical events have been held in the ceremonial hall of the palace over the years. In 1979, Captain Misa's building became a cultural asset of exceptional importance.
The appearance of Captain Misa's mansion
The architecture of the building is done in a stylistic mixture of Gothic, Romanesque, and Renaissance elements. The facade is decorated, and the people of Belgrade called it the "Venetian palace". On both sides of the main entrance, at the height of the first floor, there are two full sculptures in niches - "Apollo with a lyre" and "Minerva with a spear and a shield". Medallions with motifs of angels are placed above the door, and above the window on the second floor is the coat of arms of the Principality of Serbia.
At the top of the building is an observatory because the building was the tallest in Belgrade until the beginning of the twentieth century. During the whole day and night, there was a guard in the observation post who had a view of the whole of Belgrade and could warn of the outbreak of fire. It was in use until 1919.
