Vuk's monument - the most important information

Vuk's monument is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. It is located in the area of the city municipality of Zvezdara. The monument was named after Vuk Kradzic, a reformer of the Serbian language. The surrounding settlement is also known for the monument, which does not necessarily fall to the local community.

About Vuk Karadzic
Vuk is the most important person in Serbian literature of the first half of the 19th century. He was the first Serbian linguist, reformer of the Serbian language, collector of folk intellectual creations. He also earned several honorary doctorates. After the death of many of his brothers, his parents gave him the name Vuk in order to drive away ghosts and witches. He reformed the Serbian orthography by publishing the Pismenica srpskog jezika, published in Vienna in 1814. Despite its incompleteness, this work is significant as the first grammar of the speech of the common people. Vuk Karadzic is considered the founder of the Serbian language and grammar.

Features of Vuk's monument
The place where the Vuk's monument is located, at the time when it was erected, was considered the outskirts of the city. It is located on the east corner of Roosevelt Street and King Alexander Boulevard. In 1932, the sculptor Djordje Jovanovic made a design for a monument that was erected in the same year, in a place that was then considered extremely unsuitable for a monument to such an important person, due to its distance from the center. A remote part of the city from the beginning of the twentieth century, today is still one of the urban centers of the capital, and the famous meeting place of many Belgraders near Vuk. It is also the center of modernization because it has an underground tunnel, which is the first step in a long-term plan to build a subway.

What to see / visit
Near the monument is the Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic Theater, which is very popular with the people of Belgrade. In addition to the modern and historical, there is also an educational aspect of this place because it is surrounded by the five most popular faculties in Belgrade: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, as well as the Belgrade Business School.
