Aviation Museum - the most important information
The Aviation Museum in Belgrade is one of the leading museums of this type in the world, and the building in which the museum is located is a cultural monument.
History of the Aviation Museum
The Museum of Yugoslav Aviation, as it was first called, was established by establishing a special Department of History and the Museum of Yugoslav Aviation under the Yugoslav Air Force Command in 1957. The museum was first located in the building of the Aviation Command in Zemun and in the building of the Officers' Home within the Old Airport "Belgrade" under Bezanijska kosa. In 1968, a decision was made to build a special building that would be intended only for this museum. The building in which the Aviation Museum is located today was built from 1969 to 1989 and is located within the "Nikola Tesla" airport. It was made according to the project of the Sarajevo architect Ivan Straus.
Exhibition of the Aviation Museum
Within the museum, there are over 200 aircraft, of which it is possible to see 50 of them in the museum building and a dozen on the plateau around the building. Some of these aircraft are awaiting restoration. The most important aircraft is the Italian-made Fiat G-50 fighter, which is the only surviving one in the world. Next to it, it is possible to see a replica of Ivan Saric's Saric 1 aircraft, as well as Storm 11, which is the first armed plane used in the Serbian army. Of the domestic aircraft, there are the G-2 Galeb which is the first domestic aircraft with a jet engine and the Fizir FN, the first aircraft manufactured in Serbia.
