Golubac Fortress - the most important information

You must have heard of the town of Golubac and its popular fortress! Here you can find out more about the history of the mentioned fortress, as well as its significance. Golubac Fortress is located in the Djerdap National Park, on the right bank of the Danube. It is located on high cliffs, at the place where this river narrows, ie at the very entrance to the Djerdap gorge.

History and significance of the fortress
Golubac Fortress was first mentioned in 1335 as a Hungarian military fortification. The exact time of its creation is not known, as well as who built it. It is known that the Byzantines needed this fortress in order to determine the borders in the north, while the Hungarians needed it to secure their possessions across the Danube. This place was also important for the Serbian people, since it protected these areas from Hungarian incursions. Due to all the above, Golubac had a turbulent history. Many battles were fought around it during the Middle Ages, especially between the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. This city was once part of the state of the Serbian prince Lazar. Immediately after the Battle of Kosovo, Golubac passed into Turkish hands, only to be handed over to the Serbs in the second half of the 19th century. Today, Golubac is a popular tourist attraction. The project of revitalization of the fortress Golubacki grad started in 2012, when a bypass and a tunnel were built. The works were completed in 2019.

Appearance and characteristics of the fortress
Golubac Fortress was built in a fan-shaped manner and consists of three parts: the front, the rear and the upper town. It consists of a total of 10 towers and 2 large car gates. Half of the towers are made of stone on all sides, while the other stones are on 3 sides, and the fourth side, facing the interior, is missing. The first tower is called Donjon and has an octagonal base, from which rises a circular peak. The last, tenth tower, has only one floor, with openings for cannons. Its base is octagonal and is almost identical to the three artillery towers, which were added to the famous Smederevo fortress.
